Priorities in university

This past week-end I got to see a lot of my friends from university and came to the realization that the friends and connections I made while in school are probably the most valuable thing career wise I’ve gotten out of my degree. My major isn’t very well known or recognized by employers, and I’ve often found myself wondering if it wouldn’t have been better to just have gotten a business degree.  But then I wouldn’t have met the wonderful people I did, and that is something that I’m not so sure I’d be willing to trade for a business degree. My friends are awesome and supportive and inspiring. At the end of the day, life is what you make of it and unless you want to be a lawyer or doctor or engineer or something, the designation on the piece of paper you get from school is not the be all end all.

That’s why I found this post on Why I regret getting straight A’s in college pretty interesting, but I don’t agree completely because one thing high grades are good for is qualifying for scholarships. Not everyone is bankrolled by their parents or wants to graduate tens of thousands of dollars in debt. I worked hard in school to get good grades not because I really cared about getting straight As, but because I knew that having a good average was going to qualify me for that many more scholarships and I sure did need the money.

Like anything else, it’s all about striking a balance between grades, social life, getting a part-time job for work experience, and having enough time to sleep.
